Employees of Valmeco AS, a company that manufactures log houses, visited the the Centre of Estonian Rural Research and Knowledge in Jõgeva village.
Külli Annamaa, Head of the Genebank, presented the activities of the Genebank in preserving genetic resources. Larissa Sirel, senior technician at the Plant Biotechnology Department, gave an overview of potato conservation as a micro-plant.
Andro Otsus, senior engineer at the Plant Variety Breeding Department, focused on the efficient use of the greenhouse, giving examples of the different types of experiments and new research projects carried out there. The work of the breeding groups was presented in the breeding department. An important activity highlighted was the wheat quality research, which contributes to the development of new wheat varieties with high flour quality.
The guests were also offered a pastry made from flour of the ´Perenaise´ wheat variety taken directly from the oven , which was prepared by Heli Lillepärg, agronomist in the cereals and oilseeds sector.
As a thank-you to the hosts, Raul Taul, President of Valmeco AS, gifted a birdhouse made by the company’s master craftsmen.
